Foraging Muskox, Photograph by Kaspar Rønningen
Photographed in the Kongsvoll Birch Forest, Dovrefjell National Park, Norway on October 2024.
While foraging near the edge of Dovrefjell National Park, Kaspar followed a trail of qiviut — soft inner muskox wool — through a quiet mountain birch forest. As he rounded a bend, just 30 feet ahead, a deep grunt echoed from the trees — a bull’s way of announcing his presence without needing to be seen. This portrait was captured in that moment, with the muskox nestled between slender birch trunks near Kongsvoll, a place whose name fittingly means “King’s Hill.” In close quarters, the bull’s size felt almost doubled, his presence immense and commanding. With worn horn tips and a coat of black still clinging to their edges, he appeared just past his prime — mature, but far from old. A regal figure in a forest befitting his stature.
